CELEBRITY PLANTS - WHAT WE THINK THE PLANTS OF THE STARS NEED THIS WINTER

Winter can be a challenging time of year for houseplants, which have to fight for survival during the darker season. The plants of the stars are no different. We decided to explore Instagram, scrolling through to find some unbe-leaf-able celebrity plants where we see an urgent need for action.

We've picked out our favourite plant Instagram posts from the past year and give the stars expert tips and encourage-mint on how to care for their green roommates. Check out the top 15 celebrity plants that knocked our stalks off:

KIM KARDASHIAN

Social media pro Kim Kardashian knows how to show off a beige-coloured dress even without make-up: Where better to do it than in front of a lush green palm tree background. With so much light, air, humidity and hotness, your palm trees will definitely become a real home jungle for your next shoot, Kim.

Expert tip: Remember, Archontophoenix cunninghamiana also likes to grow high, so don't let this fast-growing palm grow out of control. Under optimal conditions it can grow up to 20 metres high. Make sure to find a place where it can develop to its full potential right from the start.

SERENA WILLIAMS

American tennis superstar Serena was named world number one by the Women’s Tennis Association on eight occasions between 2002 and 2017. The legend who also won 23 Grand Slam singles titles is looking slamming in this insta-post shaking her hips. You grow, girl!

Expert tip: A strong plant goes with a strong woman - and the Dypsis lutescens is tough and full of power. During its dormant phase between November and March it’ll only need a little water. However, from March the rainy season begins and it’ll need more watering. Temporary dryness at the root base is tolerated but can lead to dry tips.

JARED LETO

American actor and musician Jared Leto is a self-confessed vegan, so we're not surprised that he surrounds himself with plenty of houseplants. Apparently, nature is thanking him for his thoughtful lifestyle: the monstera is sprouting new, large and visibly healthy leaves.

Expert tip: When you go on holiday, you can put the aerial roots of the monstera in water glasses. That way, your plant is well looked after while you're away.

VICTORIA BECKHAM

The former Spice Girl turned fashion designer also announced recently that she’s switched to a plant-based diet. And here, her plant bodyguards are watching over her dutifully while she puts her colourful stilettoed feet up and shows off her classic Posh Spice peace sign. Girl Plant power!!!

Expert tip: Victoria Beckham opts for timeless chic when it comes to her plants too. The Kentia palm, or Howea forsteriana, can live up to 40 years and is very easy to care for. Our tip if you also want to work under these palm trees? Feed it weekly in the summer with liquid fertilizer.

BARACK OBAMA

Who would have thought a former US president would publish a podcast together with music legend Bruce Springsteen and a Monstera deliciosa? Well, admittedly, the Monstera didn't have nearly as much to say in the podcast as we would have liked, but in this snapshot it's our highlight.

Expert tip: Unfortunately, it can’t really show what it’s made of In this location. Choose a spot directly in the sun, with more room to grow, and it’ll steal the show. With more sunlight, the larger and more impressive its leaves become.

JAMES MCAVOY

What in carnation? James looks like he’s channeling Mel Gibson’s portrayal of William Wallace in the 1995 film Braveheart in this pic. But that hasn’t stopped the Monstera deliciosa behind from trying to upstage the X-Men star. We think if the plant could strike a pose, it’d be similar to James’, because light from above is a houseplants dream!

Expert tip: In this light, the Monstera can grow straight up and only needs climbing support to reach its full size. For extra strength, you can put the aerial roots into a container of water or into the soil so it can absorb nutrients even better.

PARIS HILTON

The it girl of the noughties tied the knot last year, but that doesn't mean she's neglecting her role as a member of the Hilton clan, as this family photo proves. From left: sister Nicky, the somewhat lesser-known indoor palm in mum's living room, mother Kathy, and of course Paris herself.

Expert tip: Palms are the perfect plants for you if you'd rather worry about your followers than your houseplants. Not even cacti are easier to look after!

ANGELA MERKEL

Rarely has politics made us as sentimental as Angela Merkel's farewell as German Chancellor. Even at the final meetings with her counterparts, like here with French President Emmanuel Macron, people were visibly moved. But it’s about Thyme someone took a look at those neglected houseplants!

Expert tip: The lopsided growth of this Clusia suggests it was only turned at the last moment for this photo. The leaves want to absorb the maximum amount of light and will always turn towards the light source. So if you turn it more often, it’ll grow without a side parting.

BRITNEY SPEARS

America’s Princess of Pop has a fabulous idea for a cosy sleepover on the floor: a mattress, a blanket and three ficus plants...and voilà, the perfect bedroom is ready. Unfortunately, the ficus cannot live on light, fresh air and love alone - so Britney, don't forget to take care of your plants as well.

Expert tip: Make sure your ficus branches out properly and becomes dense, by cutting off the main shoot at the third to fifth set of leaves, at the beginning of spring. Then, don’t forget to re-pot it in summer. This will encourage new shoots to form and make the ficus nice and bushy.

OPRAH WINFREY

If you’re a fan of Oprah’s US talk show, you’ll know she likes to invite her guests to her private guest house. To make sure they don't feel lonely between interviews, they have the company of a grandiose ficus. This was also the case for British superstar Adele, who was interviewed by Oprah for the release of her new album.

Expert tip: Check out the healthy aerial roots on Oprah's ficus, they are blooming beautiful! But beware, these plants take root quickly, so make sure it’s stable. If your ficus is a bit wobbly on its feet, try this method of guiding it along its trunk to the roots too. Allergy sufferers beware: Ficus sap contains latex and can be irritating to the skin. It also leaves unsightly stains on clothes and carpets.

US PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN

Judging by the Instagram postings by the President of the United States, the White House is full of green plants. But we wonder how this ivy survives in these conditions, above a fireplace, without daylight and exposed to heated discussions every day. Could it be fake or maybe it’s regularly replaced?

Expert tip: Plants that can survive with zero light are unfortunately a myth. But some plants can cope well with very little light. One of these is ivy, or Hedera helix, which is sensitive to a warm and dry environment. So we think above the fireplace and far away from a window is the perfect example of an unsuitable location. So our guess is that it’s regularly replaced.

AMANDA HOLDEN

English actress and Britain's Got Talent judge Amanda Holden is practically camouflaged in this picture, with her outfit matching her plants almost perfectly. But it’s not the first time she’s posed with a plant. Amanda also made headlines last year for planting a palm tree in her garden in honour of Captain Tom Moore. 100-year-old Captain Tom, who died last year, became a household name after raising over £30m for NHS charities by walking laps of his garden during the first coronavirus lockdown.

Expert tip: This is the perfect well lit spot for Amanda’s Kentia palms. If you’re not sure if you’ve found the best placement for your palms, look out for slow growth or brown spots on the tips of the leaves even if it's getting enough water. The Kentia palm can grow up to 15 metres tall so make sure to trim it back before it reaches the ceiling.

ELLIE GOULDING

English singer songwriter Ellie Goulding’s heels might be high, but her Kentia palm plant is higher. We sincerly hope that her green photo bomber is getting enough sunlight in that dark hallway! The folktronica singer also performed at the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in 2011.

Expert tip: Ellie’s sunlight loving Kentia palm desperately needs to be moved to a spot with some more light, otherwise it won’t be looking so green for much longer. This plant is popular with our celebrities, but has also been a firm favourite since the turn of the last century, so obviously still has its charm

ALEXANDRIA OCASIO-CORTEZ

With humour, courage and tenacity, US Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez likes to shake up the balance of power in the Senate. Her positive energy, together with an abundance of light, is obviously also doing her ficus the world of good too.

Expert tip: To avoid dry, brown leaf tips on a Ficus lyrata, make sure it gets the right amount of water. It reacts sensitively to waterlogging but it’s otherwise pretty easy to care for. Give it small amounts of water more often. Take care if it’s placed near a heater, as it can cause dry leaf tips. Try spraying a few drops of low-calcium water on the leaves every few days to solve the problem.

ANNALENA BAERBOCK

In this post, Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock dreams of a greener future. She wants to prove that she’s no one trick peony. More sustainable home gardening means long-lasting houseplants - instead of constantly buying new ones.

Expert tip: Be careful when choosing your plants. See what suits you and your home: How much light do you have and which one suits your lifestyle? Be honest with yourself and your plant, and nothing will stand in the way of a harmonious coexistence with your green roommates.
